Piva Nature Park

Piva Nature Park

The Piva Lake is the largest artificial lake in Montenegro and the second largest overall, right after Lake Skadar. It was created by the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in 1975. Located near Mratinje, 10km from Šćepan Polje, there stands a dam that is 220m high, among the tallest in Europe. The lake reaches depths of over 180m in some places and stretches 42km in length. Piva Lake serves as the largest reservoir of drinking water and provides excellent conditions for calm water sports. It is particularly attractive for fishing and for those who wish to enjoy cruising while admiring the remaining details of the submerged canyon of the Piva River. With the creation of the artificial Piva Lake, it became necessary to relocate the Piva Monastery. This endeavor was executed by a group of experts so skillfully and professionally that neither the construction nor the entire fresco painting of the church was disturbed or altered in any way. It's also worth mentioning that the sinking of the land beneath Piva Lake resulted in the permanent loss of the Odmut Cave, which had a depth of about 11 meters and contained many traces dating back to the early Neolithic period.

This tour is for nature and history enthusiasts. The Piva Monastery is one of the most significant Orthodox monasteries in Montenegro, located in the incredible surroundings of Plužine. It used to be situated at the source of the Piva River, but it was relocated to a new location due to the construction of a dam and reservoir for the hydroelectric power plant.

The area around Piva Lake consists of more than forty small villages that are ideally positioned within the natural environment. These villages feature old-fashioned architecture typical of traditional mountain hamlets.
