North Fairy Tale

MORAČA MONASTERY, KOLAƠIN, BIOGRADSKA GORA

Kolaơin is a town founded by the Turks in the 17th century. Next to it flows the ever-restless Tara River, as well as the Moraca River, while it is surrounded by mountains from all sides. Sinjajevina, Bjelasica, Ključ, and Vučje embrace this small town. Kolaơin is located at an altitude of 954 meters and offers excellent vacation opportunities both in winter and summer. Due to its altitude and favorable climate, Kolaơin is classified as a mountain resort. A special attraction for tourists is Biogradsko Lake, located in the Biogradska Gora National Park, which is one of the three preserved primeval forests in Europe. Biogradsko Lake is situated at an altitude of 1094 meters, and around it, there are well-maintained hiking trails.

The Morača Monastery is one of the most monumental Serbian medieval monuments in Montenegro. It is situated on the right bank of the Morača River, in the expanded part of the canyon, on a natural plateau with picturesque landscape, in the Municipality of Kolaơin. The Morača Monastery was founded in 1252 by Stefan, the son of King Vukan and the grandson of Nemanja, as mentioned in the inscription above the western portal. The monastery has a rich history, and since it was built during the early reign of the Nemanjić dynasty, it has witnessed many events.

Here, nature takes care of itself, while people ensure that this harmony remains undisturbed. Although Biogradsko Lake is open to visitors, strict controls are in place to minimize human impact on this area, ensuring that Biogradska Gora and its lake preserve their pristine beauty and purity forever.
